Meet FOJ’s New Treasurer

Sunday April 6, 2025

Hello Friends of Jamaica,

I’m Bernard, and I’m honored to step into the role of Treasurer for Friends of Jamaica! I was born and raised in Treasure Beach, St. Elizabeth, in the early part of my life before moving to the United States. I return to Jamaica often, as most of my family still lives there, and I continue to feel a deep connection to the island and its people.

One of my favorite things about Jamaica is the incredible variety of fruits and food products. The country’s motto, “Out of Many, One People,” beautifully reflects the diverse cultures that have shaped Jamaica over centuries. As different groups of people arrived on the island—starting with the Tainos, followed by Africans, Europeans, Indians, Chinese, and others—they each left their mark, contributing not just to Jamaica’s culture but also to its agriculture.

These groups introduced fruits, vegetables, and flavors from their homelands, blending them into the vibrant culinary tapestry we enjoy today. Personally, I can never get enough of the mangoes, neesberry, all the varieties of plums and sweetsop—each one a delicious reminder of Jamaica’s rich and diverse heritage.

What drew me to FOJ was the opportunity to be part of something meaningful—an organization dedicated to supporting the incredible people and communities of Jamaica. Whether it’s funding education, empowering young leaders, or supporting sustainable development, FOJ’s work is about making a real, lasting impact where it matters most.

As we head into the season of giving, I’m reaching out to ask for your support. Every donation—big or small—goes directly toward fueling projects that make a difference in Jamaica. Together, we can celebrate the legacy of “Out of Many, One People” and support the island and its people in building a brighter future. Let’s keep this important work going strong!

Thank you,
Bernard Blake
