Celebrate & Serve: Honoring Jamaica, Empowering Jamaicans

A Fundraising Campaign from Friends of Jamaica | July 28–August 8

Each year, Jamaicans observe Emancipation Day (August 1) and Independence Day (August 6)—a time to reflect, celebrate, and take pride in the country’s journey.

At Friends of Jamaica, we see this first week of August as more than a moment to learn and honor Jamaica’s story. It’s also a chance to support the work happening right now—led by Jamaicans, for Jamaicans—to build stronger, more connected communities.

That’s what Celebrate & Serve is all about.

From July 28 to August 8, we’ll be sharing insights about Jamaican history and culture—but more importantly, we’re raising funds to support grassroots projects across the island. And we’re asking for your help.

What does your donation make possible?

💚 In the rural community of Hayfield, an accessibility ramp was built so that elderly and disabled residents could safely reach the local church and school. It wasn’t complicated or expensive—but it made a real difference. We helped fund that.

🖤 In Portland, a small youth group called Chesscot United used our support to run life skills and mentorship programs for teens—some of whom were navigating tough choices and limited options. Their impact continues to grow.

💛 These are the kinds of efforts your donation supports: community-led, thoughtful, and practical projects that respond directly to local needs.
