In 2024, Friends of Jamaica (FOJ) awarded a grant to the Chesscot United Youth Services to provide the Ujama Football Club with essential equipment, such as shoes, socks, and balls. The support from FOJ allowed the team to participate in constructive sporting activities, including regulation games with other teams in East Portland.
The Ujama Football Club has been around for many years helping to provide a safe space for the youth of East Portland to participate in fun and impactful activities like football (soccer for those American folks). However, over the years, it has become increasingly harder for the Ujama Football Club to provide the essential equipment for these young men.
Providing support for groups, such as the Ujama Football Team, helps to create a sense of community among the team members resulting in a sense of belonging, feeling supported, and overall enjoyment of having fun.
FOJ is thrilled to have been part of helping to keep this space alive and thriving for the youth of East Portland.
