Meet FOJ’s New President

Wednesday November 27, 2024

Joel Matheson, former Jamaica Peace Corps Volunteer and new FOJ President, asks for your support.

Hello friends of Jamaica!

I’m Joel, and I’m excited to introduce myself as the new President of Friends of Jamaica (FOJ). From 2018 to 2020, I served as a Peace Corps Jamaica Volunteer in the parish of St. Thomas, working in the agriculture sector alongside smallholder farmers and community groups.

Living and working in Jamaica wasn’t just about volunteering – it was about learning from communities that are full of resilience, creativity, and strength. These experiences shaped who I am today, and they inspire me every day to continue supporting Jamaica and its people through FOJ.

During my time on the island, I witnessed firsthand how much we all have to offer one another, no matter where we come from. There’s a Jamaican proverb, “One one coco full basket,” which teaches us that success doesn’t happen overnight- it’s achieved through small, consistent steps over time.

As we approach the end of the year, I invite you to take one of those small, meaningful steps with us. Your contribution, no matter the size, can help fill the basket and ensure that community-driven efforts across Jamaica continue to grow and thrive. Whether it’s supporting education, local development, or other impactful initiatives, your support will have a lasting impact in communities across the island—from Kingston to the hills and valleys.

Thank you for being part of this community. Together, we can honor the spirit of collaboration and the wisdom of “One one coco full basket” by making a difference for the island we all care so deeply about.

With gratitude,
Joel Matheson
