Friends of Jamaica is pleased to share an update on the recently completed Birch Wright Soap-Making Workshop, which was partially funded by FOJ and proved to be a highly successful initiative in skill-sharing, empowerment, and community engagement. The workshop introduced participants to the basics of natural soap-making and provided them with the knowledge, confidence, and resources to continue the craft independently.
A total of 15 individuals directly benefited, including 10 participants and 5 support staff who assisted with marketing and facilitation. In addition, the Community Center increased its capacity by hosting the event, making it a meaningful contribution to the wider community. Participants described the experience as fun, informative, and enjoyable, with all respondents noting they would recommend it to others. Many expressed appreciation for the quality and quantity of materials provided, which exceeded expectations and allowed them to begin experimenting at home right away. Each participant received raw ingredients, basic equipment, and a Beginner’s Soap-Making Booklet to ensure they could build on what they learned.
While there were some challenges—such as limited heating implements and not enough scales and thermometers for individual use—these circumstances fostered teamwork and collaboration. The engaging, hands-on nature of the workshop built a strong sense of community and encouraged problem-solving among attendees. Beyond the immediate skills gained, the workshop also promoted sustainability by encouraging the use of handmade soap as an eco-friendly alternative to commercial products containing synthetic additives.
The project’s goals and objectives were fully achieved, leaving participants better equipped with practical skills that could serve as a hobby, a source of gifts, or even the foundation of a small business. Friends of Jamaica is proud to have supported this workshop and looks forward to seeing the lasting impact it will have on both the individuals involved and the wider community.
